How to Get Lost In CyberSpace

How to Get Lost In CyberSpace

The original thought for my blog was the webmasters guide to the galaxy, which is a play off the funny movie the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Now in this movie, they get lost quite often so I thought I’d throw in a quick guide on getting lost in cyberspace:

  1. Lose all your passwords. Fastest way to get lost in cyberspace is to loose all your passwords. Whether your password program database gets deleted or note paper you’ve been jotting your passwords on gets eaten by the dog, your royally screwed without your passwords.

  2. Forced to change your e-mail address. Your friends, family, and even your bank can’t find you! This is especially bad when you lose all your passwords, but can’t have them e-mailed to you because you can’t check your old e-mail.

  3. Bookmarks getting deleted. If you’ve ever had the misfortune to have your bookmarks deleted, you will know what a nightmare it is.

  4. Searching Google.com for the word ‘cyberspace’ Actually you could probably search for any word at Google and get lost quite quickly.

  5. Getting your username banned. You could sign-up for a new username of course, but starting all over and getting recognized by a new username can be harder than you think.

  6. Not checking your RSS reader for a few days. You will certainly get lost if you don’t check your feeds. It is mindblogging to have 100’s of unread posts.

  7. Going to hotmale.com instead of hotmail.com There isn’t much more to say than just that.

The last one is a little tricky and I didn’t link to it on purpose. I can only suggest when you start to get lost in cyberspace, to return to your homepage as quickly as possible and try another route. Or just do regular backups of your passwords and bookmarks, and the rest will probably sort itself out!

LOL Sarah, I made that “hotmale” mistake when I got my first computer in 1998. I figured out pretty quick I was at the wrong site!

BTW, I do have an award for you but I also did a mini favicon article/bluejar review. I hope you like it!

Hehehe sweet and very interesting post. This reminds of the joke

“Why do you need Internet to access your mail?

    Because its Hot-Male ;)” lol

  5. Sarah on October 9th, 2007 at 2:59 pm

@menopauseprincess: I made the same mistake about 10 yrs ago!

    @DJ Flush: hehehe… poor hotmail.com

@Madhur: I know what you mean, I’m scared to look at mine right now.

@Susan: Yes it is scarey :c( I usually use the same one, bad idea though.

So what do you do when your Feed gets out of control…mine is beyond control…I really could benefit from a daily schedule so that I can check it regularly.

wow people will type hotmale instead of hotmail!? That’s pretty funny to hear.

  8. WarriorBlog on October 9th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

LOL Good idea for coming up with this post. I would be so piss off if the first 3 happened…the first one did happen once and it was a little frustrating.

Items 1 to 3 & 6 are pretty scary. Add to that losing all your RSS subsriptions as well - that would be a nightmare :/

    LOL Sarah,
I have yet to check out that hot male site. I wondered where you were in the past few days. At least know I know what you’ve been up to. (Googling at….)

    Monika :-)

@Adam - If you’re talking about checkin’ out all the feeds that you’re subscribed to, I just try and take an hour every day (sometimes on my lunch break at work) and go and check’em all out. That seems to have been working for me lately.

  12. Adam on October 10th, 2007 at 5:40 am

I guess I just need to get into the habit of checking it on a daily basis.

    LOL. That made my night!

    Sarah-
Hmm… I was thinking that only few would have made the hotmale mistake. Looks like I got company. When I made that mistake at my workplace I was really embrassed..

Yeah - or open a hotmail account and don’t check your mail for 30 days - only to find it’s all been deleted. Does this still happen? Or have they seen sense.

  16. Sarah on October 10th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

That darn hotmail one got a lot of us!

@John Lampard: I lost some of my RSS subscriptions when moving to and from different rss readers. I didn’t notice until I cam upon their website again and realized it. Thats tough!

@Adam: I try to check at least once a day. This seems to be the only way, once you get off track you might just have to skip those days otherwise you’ll be trapped.

    @Acopic: I don’t know, I haven’t used hotmail for years!

I’d have to add one more item to the list since it has happened to me: losing all of your digital photos! I don’t even remember the last time I used regular 35mm film or printed a picture on paper! It’s kind of scary actually because digital cameras have not been around for THAT long!

But when you lose your pictures, it feels like you’ve lost a LOT! Back em up!!!

I used to lose my passwords regularly, that’s why i now store them in a program that saves and protects them. However, i dread the day that i lose the password to the program that stores my passwords. Haha.
